In 2004, the department introduced Tasers and distributed them to officers. Results show that officer injuries were down by 25 percent, damage claims down by 33 percent, and arrests up by two percent.
The air support unit currently uses two Eurocopter EC-130B4 helicopters, known as Fox-1 and Fox-2, which can seat up to 8 people. Their previous police aircraft were two MD 500E helicopters which could only seat 5 people.
On November 12, 2007, the Long Beach Police Department announced plans to purchase two used Eurocopter AS-350B2 helicopters from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as their primary police helicopter. The reasons for the switch primarily are due to higher operating costs involved in using the EC-130s.[1]
Police Chief Anthony Batts stepped down in October 2009 to become the new police chief of the Oakland Police Department. He was replaced by Jim McDonnell, who was previously a 28 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and previously was Deputy Chief. He was sworn in on March 13, 2010.[2]
